My husband & I are in our early 30's. I'm telling you this to show that yes, this kind of thing does still exist everywhere. We live in Louisiana, & when my husband was little, racism was very, very strong. Raccoons got strung up to show blacks to stay on their side of the street. Whites were being slaughtered with messages on them, & so forth. I was surprised that sort of gritty violence was still going on at that time. I'm from Tx. Anyway, when he moved me here, a friend tells me it's not a good idea to be too polite out in the open to the African-Americans around here. Well, I got fired up right away. {My mother allowed me to have black friends when I was little, but I wasn't allowed to bring them home. Which really sucked because I had some really good friends then, best I ever had, but there was still always a little tension because they could never come over. And it was an all black school, so you can imagine the tension all the way around.} I don't let people tell me who to be nice to any more. And we don't have that friend any more because of it. I grew up in church, & even though I'm no longer going, I still believe in this...If God loves everyone, then I can too.

2dazed, it's a shame that your husband had to deal with that. 32 years ago, I lived in New Orleans, and in some areas, you had to be careful, but for the most part, people weren't too bad, regardless of color. What you had to watch out for more was the MOB. And yes, I mean of the Mafia type nature. I am 48, and while there was a black/white issue where I grew up in Huntsville, AL, it wasn't as bad as what you described..and for that, I'm grateful. I think it's a shame that people can't like someone regardless of color or nationality. I judge people on themselves, not what color they are, or where they're from (if not from here). Some of my closest friends have been from Iran, India, Nigeria.....not one of them a terrorist. Skin matters not to me....personality, honesty, integrity are what matter to me.

This is true.
My mother raised me to believe "people aren't a color, they are human. Beyond color we're still flesh and bone"
I never would judge someone because of the color of their skin, on the same hand I don't wanna be judged by the color of mine either.
Still that's never the case, one race will always judge another and saying that there is anyway to live in a colorless world is wishing for perfection. There is no perfection in a world of imperfection, i've come to terms with that. There will always be people, somewhere in the world, that judge people by color or even religion or sexual orientation. It will almsot always be like that, but our generations are changing, theres no telling waht the future really holds for us all!
I'll be using this in my "life/controversial" section of my Stamp Journal!

Thank you so much. I really appreciate your understanding. It's a sad thing that people still judge others by such superficial things, but the world has improved a lot since I was a child, and I have a lot of hope that it will continue to get better when I get a chance to meet people like you!
